Get your free estimateFAAC Gate Motor Replacement: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
We stock and install FAAC-compatible gate motors across Fresno, with most replacements running between $680 and $1,150 installed depending on your model and swing or slide configuration. We carry the common FAAC 400, 412, 415, 770, and C720 units on our trucks, so a swap is usually same-day once we confirm your existing motor. If your gate has started slowing down, reversing mid-cycle, or just humming without moving, you’re probably looking at exactly this repair.
Most Fresno homeowners discover the failure on a Monday morning when the gate opens halfway and stops, or when the keypad beeps but nothing happens. The motor itself rarely fails all at once. Usually one component inside the motor housing gives out and the rest follows within weeks.
Which FAAC Models This Applies To
FAAC has been building hydraulic and electromechanical gate operators for decades, and Fresno homes lean heavily toward two groups: the older 400-series hydraulic swing motors on custom wrought iron gates, and the newer 412/415 electromechanical swing units on lighter residential gates. Slide gate owners typically run the 740, 741, or C720 line.
Here’s the gotcha most people don’t know: a FAAC 400 and a FAAC 412 look nearly identical from the outside, but the mounting brackets, capacitor specs, and limit switch wiring are different enough that you cannot drop one into the other’s place without modifying the gate post. We always check the metal data plate on the motor body itself, not the cover. The cover gets swapped between units more often than you’d think, especially on gates that have had a previous repair. If the plate is gone, we measure the piston stroke and match the capacitor rating before ordering anything.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: FAAC hydraulic motors are worth buying as genuine OEM parts because the internal seals and valve bodies on aftermarket rebuilds rarely hold up to Central Valley heat. For the 412 and 415 electromechanical models, a quality aftermarket motor like the ones we stock from HySecurity and some Italian OEM-equivalent suppliers performs just as well and saves $120 to $180. We’ll give you both prices in writing and let you decide.

Signs Your FAAC Gate Motor Is Failing
- Gate slows down noticeably in one direction. The motor’s run capacitor is degrading. On hydraulic FAAC units, this usually means the pump is losing pressure or the fluid has thinned from repeated Fresno summers. On electromechanicals, a failing capacitor or worn gearbox is the culprit.
- Motor hums but the gate doesn’t move at all. The start capacitor is dead, or the piston has seized. This is the most common failure we see on FAAC 400-series units that are 10 years old or more. The motor is trying; it just can’t push anymore.
- Gate stops mid-cycle and reverses. Your limit switches are out of adjustment or failing. On FAAC units these are small mechanical switches inside the housing that tell the motor where “open” and “closed” are. When they drift, the control board thinks the gate hit something and reverses.
- Burning smell or visible oil seepage at the piston. This is the seal failure signature on hydraulic FAAC motors. The oil leaks past the internal seals, the pump runs dry, and the motor burns. Once you see oil at the piston base, the repair window is measured in days, not weeks.
- Manual release works but automatic operation doesn’t. The motor itself may be fine and the problem is in the control board or a sensor. We test this before recommending a motor replacement, because sometimes a $90 limit switch fixes a problem that looked like a $900 motor.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For FAAC swing gate motor replacement in Fresno, budget $680 to $950 for a 400-series hydraulic unit installed, and $720 to $1,150 for a 412 or 415 electromechanical with new brackets and wiring. Slide gate motors like the C720 run $850 to $1,300 because the chain or rack usually needs attention at the same time.
What drives the range: whether your existing mounting brackets can be reused, whether the gate’s hinge alignment is still true, and whether your control board is compatible with the newer motor’s wiring protocol. We write the exact number down before any work starts. No surprises, no “while we’re in there” add-ons. The parts carry their manufacturer warranty, and our labor is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If something isn’t right, we make it right.
We always quote the price and get your sign-off before touching a single bolt. You’ll see the parts cost and labor broken out on paper, in your hand, before the box gets opened.

What you can safely check yourself: whether the gate moves freely in manual release mode, whether the breaker for the gate circuit is on, and whether the keypad and transmitter have fresh batteries. Those three checks rule out the most common false alarms.
What you should not do yourself: open the motor housing. FAAC hydraulic units contain a capacitor that holds a charge even with the power off, and the piston is under pressure. A FAAC 400 piston can release stored hydraulic force if the cap is removed incorrectly. That’s a genuine injury risk, not a scare line. We also see DIY attempts where the motor is swapped but the limit switches are wired backward, so the gate closes on a car or a child and the safety edges can’t see it because they were bypassed for testing. That one mistake turns a $900 repair into a $3,000 control board replacement plus a bent gate.
If I can show you what wore out and explain why, you can decide what makes sense – that is really all this visit needs to accomplish. Call (559) 785-2501 and we’ll have a technician look at your FAAC motor, usually that same day.
FAQs
A FAAC hydraulic motor on a well-aligned gate lasts 10 to 15 years in the Central Valley, while electromechanical 412/415 units average 8 to 12 years because the plastic gears wear faster in sustained 100-degree heat. Gates that are even slightly out of plumb cut that lifespan by a third or more, because the motor works against the hinge every cycle. Call (559) 785-2501 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your motor is near the end or just needs a tune-up.
Sometimes. A failed capacitor, a drifted limit switch, or low hydraulic fluid can be repaired for $120 to $300. But if the piston seal has failed or the gearbox has stripped, replacement is cheaper than rebuilding, because the parts and labor on a rebuild exceed the cost of a new motor. We’ll show you the failed component and give you both options in writing.
Most FAAC swing motor swaps take 2 to 3 hours on site once the part is confirmed, which includes wiring, limit switch adjustment, and a full open-close-open test cycle. Slide gate motor replacements run 3 to 4 hours if the chain or rack needs attention at the same time. We lay drop cloths where we work and put on shoe covers if we need to step inside for the control panel.
We keep FAAC 400, 412, 415, and C720-compatible motors on our trucks because they cover the majority of Fresno’s existing FAAC installs. If your unit is an older 740 slide or a rare 844, we source it from our local supplier and typically have it within one business day. We’ll tell you before we schedule the visit exactly what part you need and whether it’s in hand.
