We stock and install BFT-compatible gate motor replacements throughout Fresno, with most jobs running between $680 and $1,250 installed depending on your model and swing versus slide configuration. The swap itself usually takes under two hours once we’re on site, and we keep the most common BFT arm and slide motor assemblies on the truck so a single visit handles most failures. If your gate has started humming without moving, reversing mid-cycle, or simply stopped responding to the remote after years of dependable service, the motor is the part that finally gave out – and it’s one we replace regularly.
Most Fresno owners notice the problem on the way to work. They hit the remote, hear the control board click, and the gate does nothing. Or it opens halfway and stalls. That’s the classic BFT motor failure picture: the electronics still work, but the mechanical drive unit has reached the end of its useful life after years of opening and closing in Valley heat and dust.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
We work on the full BFT residential range you’ll actually find on Fresno homes: the Deimos BT swing arm series, the Phobos slide gate motors, and the older Rigel and Leo models that BFT sold through the 2000s and 2010s. The Deimos AC and Deimos BT differ in one way that matters for replacement: the BT models use a 24V motor and encoder assembly that pairs specifically with BFT’s Thalia and U-Link control boards. If you have an older Deimos AC paired with a Thalia board, the motor and capacitor setup is different, and a mismatched replacement will run but fail again within months.
The reliable way to identify what you have is the data plate on the motor housing, which lists the model, voltage, and serial number. If the plate has faded in the Fresno sun, which happens often on west-facing gates, the limit-switch style and arm mounting pattern usually tell us what we’re dealing with. We install both genuine BFT OEM motors and quality aftermarket equivalents that match the original torque and RPM specs. For Phobos slide motors especially, the aftermarket options have gotten very good, and we’ve had clients save a couple hundred dollars without losing a year of service life. Our honest read: OEM matters more on the BT encoder motors than on the older AC units, where the windings are simpler and a quality aftermarket match performs essentially the same.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Is Failing
- Humming with no movement. The motor is drawing power but the internal capacitor has degraded, which is the most common failure we see on Fresno gates after six to eight years of use. A replacement capacitor sometimes buys time, but when the windings are also worn, a new motor is the honest fix.
- Gate opens partway and stops. This usually points to a failing limit switch or encoder losing its position signal. On BFT Deimos arms, the encoder is inside the motor assembly, which pushes you toward full replacement rather than a component repair.
- Visible oil seepage from the gear head. BFT gear reducers are sealed, and once the seal fails, the lubricant leaks out, gear wear accelerates quickly, and the motor starts straining. This one doesn’t heal itself – it only gets louder.
- Remote works intermittently but the gate is slow. A motor drawing excessive current due to worn brushes or a tired gear train can still move the gate, just reluctantly. Slower operation over weeks or months is the gradual version of failure, and it’s easier to address early than when it finally stalls completely.
- Gate reverses direction mid-cycle for no reason. The motor’s obstruction sensing is tripping because the drive unit itself is binding internally. The control board isn’t the problem here; the motor is fighting itself.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A BFT motor replacement in Fresno typically runs between $680 and $1,250 installed, with the motor itself making up $350 to $750 of that depending on model and whether you go OEM or quality aftermarket. Swing arm replacements on Deimos units tend to land on the lower end, while Phobos slide motors with new limit switches and a gear lubricant refresh run higher.
Every quote includes the motor, mounting hardware, limit switch adjustment, force-setting calibration to your gate’s exact weight and travel, and a full cycle test in both directions. We also check the gate hardware itself – hinges, rollers, chain tension – because a motor that failed due to a binding hinge will just fail again if we don’t address the root cause. The price is written down and agreed to before we touch anything, and the work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. The installation usually takes about two hours, and we leave the old motor with you if you want it.
DIY or Call Us?
The honest answer: a BFT motor swap is not a beginner’s project, but there are a few things you can safely check first. Confirm the gate moves freely by hand with the motor disengaged, which tells you whether the gate hardware is binding. Check that your control board’s status lights respond when you use the remote. If the gate moves freely and the board responds, the motor is your culprit.
What you should not attempt is rewiring a 24V encoder motor or setting force and travel limits by feel. A misadjusted BFT gate can close on a child or pet, and the force settings exist for exactly that reason. Getting the limit switch positions wrong also means the gate over-travels and damages the new motor’s gear train. If you can show us what wore out and explain why it matters, you can decide what makes sense – that’s really all this visit needs to accomplish. Call us at (559) 785-2501 and we’ll walk you through what you’re seeing before we even schedule the visit.
FAQs
A properly installed BFT motor on a well-maintained gate lasts seven to ten years in the Fresno climate, though the summer heat and the fine dust we get off the ag land east of town shorten that if the gate hardware is allowed to bind. We’ve pulled BFT motors out of shaded, well-maintained gates near Woodward Park at twelve years old that were still running, and we’ve replaced five-year-old units that were fighting rusted hinges the whole time. The gate’s mechanical health drives motor lifespan more than the motor brand does.
It depends on what failed. A worn capacitor, a bad limit switch, or a failed start relay can often be replaced on their own for $90 to $220. A failed encoder inside the motor housing, worn gears, or burned windings usually means the repair labor exceeds the value of a new unit, especially on Deimos BT models where the encoder is integrated. We’ll tell you which one yours is before we quote the job, and we won’t sell you a motor if a capacitor fixes it.
Most BFT motor replacements take between ninety minutes and two hours on site, including limit and force calibration and a full test cycle. If we find gate hardware problems during the install, the visit runs longer because those need correction for the new motor to last. We quote that extra work in writing before we do it.
We carry the most common Deimos BT swing arm motors and Phobos slide motors on the truck, along with replacement capacitors and limit switch assemblies for older BFT units. If your model needs something we don’t have in the truck, we can typically get it the same week through our parts suppliers. We also stock compatible parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems, so if your second gate or driveway opener is a different brand, we can handle that on the same visit.
A full replacement includes the new motor unit, mounting hardware, limit switch adjustment, force calibration matched to your gate’s actual weight and travel, gear lubricant refresh where applicable, and a complete test cycle in both directions. We also check your hinges, rollers, and chain tension as part of the job because a smooth gate is what lets the new motor live a full life. The written quote covers all of it up front.
If your BFT gate motor is failing, call us at (559) 785-2501 and tell us what the gate is doing. We’ll talk through what you’re seeing, give you an honest read on whether it’s a motor or something smaller, and give you a free estimate before any work begins. Cody Beckman and our crew have been replacing BFT motors and keeping Fresno gates running for years, and we’re happy to look at yours.
