Linear Access Control Installation: The Fresno Owner’s Guide

Linear access control installation in Fresno typically runs between $240 and $780 installed, depending on whether you need a keypad, card reader, telephone entry unit, or full system with magnetic lock. We stock common Linear hardware on our trucks and can usually complete a single-entry replacement the same day. Most Fresno homeowners discover a problem the hard way: a keypad stops accepting codes after rain, a card reader blinks but never unlocks, or a telephone entry system rings endlessly without picking up. The good news is these are almost always the components, not the gate itself, and Linear parts are some of the most repairable we work with.

We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Linear or its parent company. We install and repair Linear equipment because it is genuinely common on Fresno gates, and over going on eighteen years of gate work I have seen which Linear components hold up and which ones quit first.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

The Linear family covers a lot of ground, and matching the right replacement to your existing system matters. The most common units we install in Fresno are from Linear’s AE series: the AE-100, AE-500, AE-1000, and AE-2000 telephone entry systems, plus the AK-11 digital keypad and the RE-1 receiver. Linear also produces the AP-5 and AP-4 card readers seen on some multi-tenant gates.

Here is the compatibility gotcha most people miss: Linear has changed wiring harnesses between production years, even within the same model number. An AE-100 sold in 2010 and one sold in 2018 look nearly identical from the outside but use different connectors at the control board. Before we quote a replacement, we always pull the cover and read the board revision label printed inside. That label tells us more than the front face ever will.

On OEM versus aftermarket: for Linear keypads, genuine OEM is worth the extra cost. The aftermarket clones we have tested use thinner membrane contacts that fail within two to three Fresno summers. For magnetic locks and power supplies, quality aftermarket equivalents from brands like Seco-Larm and Altronix are often as good or better than the Linear-branded part, and we will tell you when that is true. We will also tell you when it is not.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad accepts some codes but not others. This usually means one or more membrane contacts under the buttons have worn through, not a programming issue. A few dead buttons today become a dark keypad within months.
  • Card reader beeps but the gate does not move. The reader is reading. The problem is almost always the relay or the wiring between reader and gate operator. We trace that with a meter before replacing anything.
  • Telephone entry system rings once and hangs up. Linear units rely on a phone line or cellular module to complete the call. A single ring and disconnect typically points to the surge protector on the telephone input, which fails often in Fresno’s summer lightning season.
  • Gate unlocks on its own at random times. This is usually a failing relay on the control board sticking in the closed position, or a shorted wire in the loop detector. Intermittent self-opening is a security problem and worth a same-day call.
  • Everything works after a power cycle, then fails again within hours. A failing capacitor in the power supply cannot hold steady voltage. It works cold, fades warm, and the cycle repeats. This is the quiet problem I mentioned; left alone, it eventually takes the control board with it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here is what we charge in Fresno for common Linear access control work, installed:

  • Single keypad replacement (AK-11 or equivalent): $240 to $360 installed
  • Telephone entry system replacement (AE-100/AE-500 class): $450 to $680 installed
  • Card reader replacement with controller: $320 to $520 installed
  • Magnetic lock and power supply, new installation: $580 to $780 installed
  • Control board replacement only (if board is the failure): $180 to $310 installed

Every quote is a written price you see before we start. The price covers the part, the labor to remove the old unit, wiring verification, testing, and a walkthrough of the new or repaired system. We lay drop cloths and wear shoe covers if the work takes us inside, and you get a photo of the cleanup before we leave. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every access control installation we do: if it is not right, we make it right. No fine print.

DIY or Call Us?

Access control work sits in an awkward middle ground. Low-voltage wiring is safer to handle than line voltage, and a homeowner can absolutely check a few things first: confirm the breaker is on, confirm the keypad has not been disabled at the control board, and visually inspect for ants or corrosion behind the faceplate. Ants love the warm interior of a Linear keypad, and I have opened more than one housing that was a full colony.

Where DIY goes wrong is in the diagnosis. Most Linear access control failures are not the part the homeowner assumes is broken. We regularly arrive to replace a keypad that is fine, only to find the real fault is a corroded splice in the conduit or a power supply putting out 9 volts instead of 12. Without a meter and some experience, you will chase parts instead of the problem. If you would rather have us do exactly that, call (559) 785-2501 and we will come look. If I can show you what wore out and explain why, you can decide what makes sense. That is really all this visit needs to accomplish.
