Welding and fabrication for a Ghost Controls gate opener in Fresno typically means repairing or replacing a broken hinge bracket, a sheared arm mount, or a cracked column plate – and the installed price usually lands between $220 and $480 depending on how much metal needs to be rebuilt. We keep common Ghost Controls mounting hardware and raw steel stock on the truck, so in most cases we can weld, fabricate, and have your gate swinging again the same day you call. What we see most often: a homeowner notices the gate arm sagging a half inch lower than it used to, or hears a metallic pop when the opener cycles, and finds a hairline crack running through a welded bracket near the hinge. In Fresno’s dry heat and occasional dust storms, those welds take more punishment than people expect – and once one fails, the motor starts working against a misaligned gate, which shortens the life of the opener itself.
We’re an independent gate repair shop in Fresno – not affiliated with Ghost Controls – but we work on their openers every week, and we know which of their parts fail first and how to fix them properly.
Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To
Ghost Controls makes two main lines of residential swing and slide gate openers: the AXDP series (the dual-arm and single-arm models you’ll see on most Fresno driveway gates) and the V-Series, which includes the TSS1 and DTP1 slide-gate kits. Both lines use heavy gauge steel mounting brackets, hinge plates, and gate arms – and both share a common weakness: the factory brackets are cut for a universal fit, which means they rarely match the exact post spacing or gate thickness on older Fresno homes. That’s where fabrication comes in.
When we get a call about a Ghost Controls opener, the first thing we do is check the model number on the motor housing. On AXDP units, it’s printed on a white label on the underside of the control box. The V-Series slide kits wear their model tag on the side of the motor column. Why it matters: Ghost Controls changed the arm geometry between the AXDP and the later V-Series, and a bracket from one will not line up with the mounting holes on the other. We also measure the gate leaf itself – its thickness determines whether we can repair the existing plate or need to fabricate a taller one with a reinforcing gusset. Aftermarket steel brackets cost less than Ghost Controls-branded ones, and for most applications the aftermarket plate is actually thicker – but if your opener is still under warranty, we’ll order the OEM part so you don’t void the coverage.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate arm dips or drags when it opens. The arm mount has begun to crack where it meets the gate leaf. As the weld fails, the arm loses its lift angle, and the motor has to push harder every cycle.
- You hear a creak or a pop right at the hinge line. The metal around the hinge pin is flexing. In Fresno, a gate hinge that goes dry in the summer heat will bind, and that binding force transfers straight into the welded plate until something gives.
- The opener stalls halfway through the cycle. A cracked or bent arm bracket creates excess drag. The Ghost Controls control board reads that as an obstruction and stops the motor – even though nothing is in the way.
- Visible rust scaling on a weld seam. Older Fresno gates often have galvanized factory welds that have slowly lost their zinc coating. Once the scaling starts, the weld underneath has lost much of its original strength and may fail suddenly.
- The gate post leans slightly when the gate closes. The post plate – the fabricated anchor that ties the gate to the post – has cracked or pulled free. Left alone, it’ll take the post with it, and the repair bill goes from hundreds to thousands.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here in Fresno, a field welding and fabrication repair on a Ghost Controls gate opener runs between $220 and $480 installed. The lower end covers a straightforward job: grinding out the old crack, re-welding the bracket in place, and reinforcing it. The higher end covers fabricating a new bracket from plate steel, cutting and drilling it on site, and welding it to the gate – plus a fresh coat of rust-inhibiting primer and paint to match the original finish.
The final number depends on three things: how much of the original metal is salvageable, how thick the gate leaf is (thicker gates need a heavier plate), and whether the post itself has shifted and needs to be re-anchored. Whatever the number is, you’ll get it in writing as a fixed quote before we strike an arc. No hourly surprises. Every weld we do in Fresno is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise – if it cracks again or pulls loose within the year, we come back and make it right at no charge.
We also lay drop cloths around the work area and keep the grinding sparks contained with a welding screen. You shouldn’t find metal shavings in your flower bed three days later.
DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely inspect this yourself. Look for hairline cracks at the arm mount, wiggle the gate to feel for post movement, and check the hinge pins for dry orange powder. Those checks take ten minutes and they’ll tell you whether you need help. What you shouldn’t do is attempt a weld repair without proper equipment and training. A gate arm under spring tension can shift the instant the cracked metal is heated, and you don’t want your face near it when that happens. Welding also needs eye protection, a fire watch for the first thirty minutes after the bead goes down, and a cable layout that won’t fry the Ghost Controls control board while you work. If the control board shorts, you’re suddenly looking at a much more expensive repair than the weld would have been.
Cody Beckman, our owner here at Latch and Post Gate Repair Fresno, spent two years in the welding and fabrication program at Cerritos College before he ever touched a gate motor, and he can tell you exactly why a weld failed just by looking at the fracture surface. If I can show you what wore out and explain why, you can decide what makes sense – that is really all this visit needs to accomplish. FAQs
A properly welded and primed bracket should last as long as the opener itself – 12 to 15 years in Fresno’s climate. What kills them early is a misaligned gate post that forces the weld to flex on every cycle. We check that alignment before we ever light a torch, because a straight weld on a crooked post is a waste of steel.
Often yes. If the crack hasn’t propagated through more than a third of the plate and the surrounding metal is sound, we grind out the crack, weld it up, and add a reinforcing gusset. That typically runs $180 to $240. If the plate has multiple cracks or the holes have egged out, a new fabricated bracket is the better call. Call (559) 785-2501 and we’ll tell you which one your gate needs – the quote is free.
Most bracket repairs and replacements are done in two to three hours, including grinding, welding, painting, and safety checks. We schedule Fresno jobs around your day, and we can absolutely work around nap time if quiet matters – our tools run on battery power where possible, and the welder’s fan is the loudest thing we use.
We carry raw steel plate, square tube, and weld-on hinge brackets on the truck, along with OEM Ghost Controls mounting hardware for AXDP and V-Series models. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and DoorKing openers, so if we spot a secondary issue during the weld repair, we can usually fix it in the same visit.
